Choosing Excellence over Mediocrity

Choosing Excellence over Medioctiry, Leadrise Coaching

Recently, I had the honor of speaking to over 50+ bright students at a prestigious university in Turkey. Amidst their insightful queries about leadership careers and my experiences coaching professionals worldwide, one student's question particularly stood out. Amidst their insightful inquiries about leadership careers and my experiences coaching professionals worldwide, one student's question particularly stood out. She asked:

'What do you think we should do to not be mediocre but stand out instead?'

Flattered by her question, I had to pause and reflect, as her perception implied that I have actively pursued a not so mediocre life, both in my own journey and in guiding others.

It's true.

I am not interested in mediocrity.

In fact, it irritates me when people say it's ok to be an average Jo.

It's just not in my DNA.

I'm not content with just meeting the minimum requirements or ticking off the bare essentials to get by. The path of least resistance doesn't appeal to me; I'm driven by a desire to challenge myself and strive for excellence.

But in all honesty... In a world that often rewards conformity and settling for the status quo, daring to step beyond mediocrity can feel like an uphill battle. Societal expectations, family pressures, social media, and successful but conventional role models can make the well-trodden path seem appealing.

So.. why rock the boat, right?

The Comfort Zone: A Trap of Mediocrity

The comfort zone, characterized by routine and safety, is the breeding ground for mediocrity. It's where growth stagnates, and innovation dies. While it may offer temporary security, the comfort zone prevents us from challenging ourselves, learning new skills, and pushing our boundaries. The first step in rejecting mediocrity is recognizing the comfort zone for what it is—a limitation, not a refuge.

The Cost of Mediocrity

Mediocrity comes with a cost. In the realm of leadership and business, it translates to lost opportunities, uninspired teams, and stagnant growth. For individuals, it means unfulfilled potential, lackluster achievements, and the haunting question of "What if?" Mediocrity breeds complacency, and complacency kills ambition, creativity, and the drive to excel.

Excellence: A Mindset, Not a Destination

Excellence is often mistaken for a destination, a pinnacle of achievement. It's not the number of races you won or the test score or your title at work. In reality, excellence is a mindset—an ongoing commitment to surpassing standards, setting new benchmarks, and continually improving. This mindset propels leaders and individuals alike to seek out challenges, embrace failure as a stepping stone to success, and relentlessly pursue their goals.

The most remarkable individuals I've met—be it athletes, businesspeople, artists, or intellectuals—didn't simply aim for the bare minimum. They embraced the grind, working diligently and intelligently, consistently pushing their limits. They didn't seek shortcuts to success, nor did they wish for a magic solution to fluently speak a new language. Instead, they welcomed challenges with excitement (albeit accompanied by natural anxiety), rising to the occasion without settling for mediocrity.

Strategies for Ditching Mediocrity

  • Set the Bar High: Challenge yourself and your team with ambitious goals. High standards are the antidote to mediocrity.

  • Never Stop Learning: The knowledge well never runs dry. Invest in personal and professional development to stay relevant, adaptable, and innovative.

  • Feedback is Your Friend: Constructive criticism is a gift. Seek it out regularly and use it to refine your approach and elevate your skills.

  • Embrace the Grind: The path to excellence isn't paved with roses. Cultivate resilience by learning from mistakes, adopting a growth mindset, and persisting through challenges.

  • Find Your Tribe: The company you keep matters. Surround yourself with individuals who embody the excellence you aspire to. Their influence will raise your own standards.

The Ripple Effect of Rejecting Mediocrity

Choosing the path of excellence over mediocrity not only transforms your life but also has a profound impact on those around you. Leaders who embrace excellence inspire their teams to aim higher, innovate, and achieve more. On a personal level, pursuing excellence in your passions, relationships, and personal development enriches your life and influences those you interact with.

In Conclusion...

So I turned the tables and answered the student's question with a bunch of questions:

What future ignites your enthusiasm?

Which skills are on your "must-learn" list?

What sparks your excitement?

Where does your passion lie?

Discovering the answers to these inquiries will unveil her unique path, her personal mojo. It was so refreshing to engage with students eager to discover their mojo, unafraid of the hard work required, rather than seeking shortcuts and quick fixes to reach their destinations - a great reminder that we weren't born to be mediocre!
